Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of soap?

Soap is beneficial for the skin because it removes dirt, oil, and bacteria, helps prevent acne and other skin conditions, and improves overall skin hygiene. In addition, some soaps contain natural ingredients, such as essential oils, which can provide extra benefits by moisturizing the skin and offering aromatherapy effects.

How is soap made?

Soap is made through a process called saponification, where fats or oils (such as olive or coconut oil) react with an alkali solution (sodium or potassium hydroxide) to produce soap and glycerin. Typically, the alkali is first dissolved in cool water and allowed to warm to around 40 °C. At the same time, the fats or oils are heated to a similar temperature. The alkali solution is then slowly poured into the oils and mixed until the mixture reaches the “trace” stage, when it thickens. After that, fragrances, colorants, or exfoliating particles may be added, and the mixture is poured into molds. After 24–48 hours, the soap is removed from the molds and left to cure for 1–6 weeks, with cold-process soap requiring a longer curing time than hot-process soap.

What types of soap are available?

There are several types of soap available, each designed for different needs and preferences. You can find solid bar soaps, which are the most traditional and widely used. Liquid soaps are popular for handwashing and are convenient for everyday use. Natural and handmade soaps are made from plant-based oils and often contain essential oils or botanical ingredients. Glycerin soaps are known for their transparency and moisturizing properties. Antibacterial soaps are formulated to help reduce bacteria on the skin, while exfoliating soaps contain particles that help remove dead skin cells. In addition, there are specialty soaps such as baby soaps, sensitive-skin soaps, and aromatic or therapeutic soaps designed for specific skin types and uses.

Can soap harm the skin?

Although soap is generally safe for most people, it can be harmful to some individuals with certain skin conditions or allergies. It is important to choose a mild, non-irritating soap suitable for your skin type and to test new products on a small area of skin before applying them more widely.

How to choose the right soap for your skin type?

To choose the right soap for your skin type, consider your specific skin needs and sensitivity. For oily or acne-prone skin, look for soaps that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. For dry or sensitive skin, choose fragrance-free soaps with moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter or glycerin. For normal skin, a mild, unscented soap is usually sufficient.

What is saponification?

Saponification is a chemical reaction in which fats or oils (triglycerides) react with alkalis (sodium or potassium hydroxide) and are converted into soap and glycerin. This process takes place both in home soap-making and in industrial production.

What is the “melt & pour” technique?

This technique is especially convenient for beginners. A store-bought soap “base” (pre-melted and refined) is melted in a water bath, fragrances and colors are added, and then it is poured into molds. The setting time is 1–2 days.

How should solid soap be stored so that it lasts longer?

Keep the soap in a well-ventilated soap dish where moisture does not accumulate. After use, let it dry on a slotted or ridged surface so water does not collect underneath.
