5 mistakes when using kitchen gloves that can end in burns

2026 10 14

Kitchen gloves seem like a simple thing that just protects your hands from heat. Most people put them on when they need to take a baking tray out of the oven and take them off when everything is done. That is where problems most often appear. It is not the gloves themselves that are bad, but the way we use them.

Gloves that are too short

A common mistake is choosing short gloves that only cover the palm. When you take a deeper dish or tray out of the oven, the heat reaches the wrist and forearm. Even if the palm is protected, the skin higher up feels unprotected. Longer gloves give more freedom of movement and less risk, especially when the dish is heavy or an awkward shape.

Damp or wet gloves

Wet material conducts heat faster than dry. If the gloves have just been washed and are not fully dry, or if water from dishes has got on them, the protection weakens. A hot dish then feels hotter than it should. It is better to wait until the fabric is completely dry, or to have a second pair that is always dry.

Too thin or the wrong material

Not all gloves protect the same way. Thinner fabric can feel pleasant to the touch, but it lets heat through faster, especially if the dish has been in the oven for a long time. Recycled cotton or denser fabric usually holds better, but you still need to look at how long the dish was hot. If the gloves heat up quickly on the inside, that is a sign they are not thick enough for the job.

Using them for more than the oven

Gloves are meant for taking hot dishes out, not for holding a pan over the fire for a long time or touching hot surfaces directly. Some materials start letting heat through after a few minutes. If you feel your palm getting warm, it is better to put the dish down and wait than to try to keep hold of it. It is also not worth using the same gloves for wet or greasy jobs, because that wears them out faster.

Old and worn gloves

When seams start to come apart, the fabric thins or holes appear, the protection is no longer what it was. Most people only notice this when they have already burned themselves. It is worth looking at the gloves before every use. If the fabric looks thin or worn, it is better to replace them earlier than to wait until they fail completely.

If the old gloves no longer protect as they used to, a new pair is easy to choose in the Savas Home kitchen gloves. Good gloves are the ones you put on and forget that your hands can get burned.
