How to care for a mattress topper so it does not flatten and lasts longer

2026 09 30

A topper does not go flat in one night. It loses loft when you wash it too hot, dry it rolled up, or never turn it. Care is simple if you treat it as a thick, washable layer — not as the mattress itself.

First wash

Wash a new topper before it goes on the bed. The first cycle removes the finish and lets the fill settle in the machine, not under you. For most synthetic and “soft touch” models, 40 °C is enough. If the label allows 60 °C, that helps against mites — but not every week on the hottest programme.

Wash so the fill does not clump

Do not pack the drum. A topper takes as much room as a duvet. Crushed, it rubs, seams pull, and the fibre gathers in lumps.

Use liquid detergent without bleach. Softener is not a friend here: it weighs the fibre down and speeds up the flat feel you want to avoid. Do not wash with jeans and zips.

If the model is thick, two shorter cycles beat one overloaded one. After washing, shake and even the fill with your hands — while it is still damp it spreads more easily.

Drying decides the shape

Dry it spread out, not folded. In the air — on a rack, shake now and then. In the dryer — low or medium heat and a few tennis balls or dry towels so the fibre does not drift to one edge.

Too much heat shrinks the cover and leaves the topper wavy. Then it looks “warped”, when only the drying was wrong.

On the bed: so it does not flatten in one spot

Once a week turn the topper or swap head and foot. If you always sleep on the same side, the fill gives way there first.

A topper does not replace a sheet. You still need a sheet on top. Without it, sweat and skin flakes go straight into the layer you wash less often.

If you also use a waterproof protector, stack the layers in a sensible order: protector against the mattress, topper on top only if the maker intended that. Swap the layers and moisture stays where it should not.

How often to wash

Every 1–3 months if there is always a sheet on top. More often if you sweat, a child or pet sleeps in the bed, or the topper is the only layer.

Between washes, shake and air it. A vacuum with a soft brush takes the surface but does not replace washing.

When the topper cannot be saved

If it is still flat after washing, the fill has already collapsed. If the edges wave and will not lie flat, the cover has shrunk. If you feel lumps you cannot shake out, replace it — do not hunt for another programme.

The right topper and mattress protector are at Savas Home. Go to Savas Home, choose the size for your mattress and wash as the label says — then the layer stays even longer than the first season.

In short: do not overload the drum, no softener, dry spread out, turn it now and then, always a sheet on top.
