How to Choose a Duvet by Season: Winter, Summer and Transitional Seasons

2026 06 09

There is that moment at the end of September when you pull the thicker duvet out of the wardrobe and think: "Hmm, is this still suitable?" Or at the start of June, when it is still warm at night and you cannot find a lighter duvet anywhere. Sound familiar?

A duvet regulates your body temperature for eight hours a day – and your quality of sleep depends directly on this. In this article you will find everything you need to know about choosing a duvet by season – simply and clearly.

Why Does a Seasonal Duvet Really Matter?

Many people use the same duvet all year round. In winter – too cold, in summer – too hot. Our body naturally cools down at night – this is a biological function that helps achieve deep sleep. If the duvet is not suitable – the body cannot carry out this process properly. The result: shallow sleep, frequent waking, morning fatigue.

Winter: Warmth and Cosiness

For winter, duvets with a filling density of 400–600 g/m² are recommended.

Best materials:

  • Down and feathers – light but excellent at retaining warmth. You snuggle under it and feel as if embraced by a soft cloud.
  • Wool – naturally regulates moisture, suitable even for those who sweat at night.
  • Microfibre – economical, hypoallergenic, easy to care for.

Tip: if you sleep with a partner who has a different temperature sensitivity – consider two separate duvets. This is a Scandinavian tradition that resolves most bedroom disputes.

Summer: Cool Without Overheating

A summer duvet must be so light you barely feel its weight. Recommended filling density: 100–200 g/m².

Best materials:

  • Linen – nature's air conditioning. Cools, evaporates moisture quickly and gets softer with every wash.
  • Bamboo – antibacterial, exceptionally soft, absorbs moisture excellently. Ideal for people with sensitive skin.
  • Cotton – a classic that never disappoints. Natural, breathable, easy to care for.

Tip: on the hottest evenings you can simply wrap yourself in the duvet cover without the filling – this gives a psychological sense of comfort without overheating.

Transitional Seasons: Spring and Autumn

April. Mid-October. Warm during the day, cool at night – a real challenge for a duvet.

Solutions:

  • Universal 200–300 g/m² duvet – the golden middle ground for transitional months
  • Two-duvet system – light summer duvet + winter duvet = perfect for transitional seasons when combined
  • Four-seasons duvet – one duvet with a connection option, suitable all year round

How to Know the Duvet Has Served Its Time?

  • Filling has compressed, duvet no longer stays fluffy
  • Stains that cannot be washed out
  • Constant sneezing or allergies in bed
  • Duvet is older than 5–7 years

Your Seasonal Plan

  • Winter – warm, down or wool, 400–600 g/m²
  • Summer – light, linen or bamboo, 100–200 g/m²
  • Transitional seasons – universal cotton or two-duvet system
