Do You Sweat at Night? The Problem May Be Your Bedding – Here Is How to Change It

2025 05 28

You know that feeling. Midnight. You wake up damp, the bedding sticky, your body hot. You turn onto the other side, trying to find a cooler spot – and an hour later everything repeats itself.

Many people blame warm air, hormones or stress. And sometimes they are right. But often the answer is much simpler and easier to solve: the problem is the bedding.

Hengittävät ja kosteutta siirtävät kankaat takaavat levollisen unen.

Why Does Bedding Cause Night Sweating?

Our body naturally cools down at night – this is a biological process necessary for deep sleep. But if the bedding does not allow heat to dissipate, the body overheats. Then sweating begins – the body's attempt to cool down.

The worst culprits:

Synthetic fabrics (polyester, acrylic, microfibre) – they cannot effectively evaporate moisture. Moisture accumulates in the fabric and around the body, creating that warm, damp tunnel you know so well.

Overly thick duvets – used all year round without seasonality. A winter duvet in summer is a direct cause of overheating.

Synthetic mattress covers – often ignored, but they can also block air circulation.

Old bedding – worn fabric loses breathability and regulates temperature less effectively.

What Bedding Helps with Night Sweating?

Not all natural materials fight sweating equally well. Here is an honest comparison:

Linen – the best choice

Linen is nature's air conditioning. Its fibre structure is hollow – meaning air constantly circulates through the fabric. It absorbs moisture up to 20% of its weight without losing the feeling of dryness and evaporates it very quickly.

The first touch of a linen sheet is always cool – even at room temperature. That is not imagination, that is physics: linen has a high thermal conductivity coefficient and effectively takes heat from the skin.

Additional benefit: over time linen gets softer with every wash – it improves rather than deteriorates.

Percale cotton – an excellent everyday choice

Percale is a densely woven but highly breathable fabric. Its matt surface does not accumulate heat the way satin does. It absorbs moisture excellently and dries quickly. It is the most popular choice in hotels – and not by accident.

Bamboo fibre – a good choice for people with sensitive skin

Bamboo has natural thermoregulating properties. It absorbs moisture faster than cotton and evaporates it quickly. Ideal for those who sweat due to hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) or have sensitive skin.

What to avoid:

Satin – although soft, the lustrous surface does not allow air to circulate freely. For night-time sweaters – not the best choice.

Microfibre and polyester – cheaper but practically impermeable to air. If you sweat – these fabrics only make the situation worse.

Flannel bedding – excellent in winter but in summer or on warm nights – a real mistake.

The Duvet – an Often Ignored Factor

Many people invest in good bedding but forget that the duvet plays an even more important role in temperature regulation.

What to look for in a duvet for night sweating:

  • GSM: for summer 100–200 g/m² is recommended. This is a light, barely noticeable duvet that gives a psychological sense of cover without overheating.
  • Material: bamboo, linen or lightweight cotton duvets – the best choice. They breathe and allow moisture to dissipate.
  • Avoid: synthetic duvets with polyester filling – they accumulate heat.

Practical tip: if you do not want to change the duvet, start with a smaller step – simply cover yourself at night with just the duvet cover without the filling. This gives the feeling of cover without overheating.

Pillow and Pillowcase – Do Not Forget the Details

Face and neck are some of the hottest parts of the body during sleep. An unsuitable pillow or pillowcase can cause sweating even when all other bedding is appropriate.

Pillowcase: choose linen or percale cotton. Silk pillowcases also regulate temperature excellently and are particularly pleasant for skin and hair.

Pillow filling: synthetic filling accumulates heat. If you sweat around your head – try a natural latex or bamboo pillow. They breathe better than standard synthetic versions.

Practical Tips That Help Immediately

1. Wash more often. Sweat accumulates in the fabric – even if it looks clean visually. Bedding should be changed weekly and for those who sweat – even more frequently.

2. Wash at 60°C. This destroys bacteria that cause unpleasant odour and restores the breathability of the fabric.

3. Dry well. Insufficiently dried bedding accumulates moisture and becomes even less breathable.

4. Check the mattress. If the mattress is old or synthetic – it may also be a cause of overheating. A mattress protector made from natural materials can help.

5. Consider room temperature. The ideal sleep environment temperature is 16–20°C. Even the best bedding will not help if the room is too warm.

When Is Bedding Not the Problem?

It is worth knowing that night sweating is not always related to bedding. Sometimes it can be:

  • Hormonal changes (menopause, pregnancy, thyroid problems)
  • Side effects of medication
  • Infection or illness
  • Anxiety and stress

If after changing the bedding the situation does not improve or the sweating is very intensive – it is worth consulting a doctor.

Summary: Where to Start?

If night sweating is disturbing sleep – start with the simplest step:

1. Change the bedding set to linen or percale cotton. This is the most quickly noticeable difference.

2. Check the duvet – is it suitable for the season? For summer a light, breathable one is needed.

3. Change the pillowcase to linen or percale – face and neck will greatly appreciate it.

4. Wash more frequently – clean bedding finds it easier to regulate temperature.

Good sleep without sweating is achievable. And often one right choice is all it takes.
