One kitchen towel for everything? Here’s why experts recommend avoiding it
In many homes one kitchen towel hangs by the sink and does every job. We dry our hands with it after washing up, wipe plates, clean the table and sometimes even grab a hot pot when we need to move quickly. It seems convenient and thrifty until one day we notice the towel smells strange and the dishes do not look as clean as we would like after drying. Many people simply change it more often, but the problem often lies not in how frequently it is washed, but in the fact that one piece of fabric is used for all the different tasks.
Hands and dishes want different things
When we dry our hands, skin oils, soap residue and bacteria that live on the skin stay on the fabric. The same towel later touches clean dishes or the table where we prepare food. Even if it looks dry, there is already more moisture and microorganisms in it than we see at first glance. Experts often recommend separating hand drying from dish drying for exactly this reason. That reduces the risk of bacteria from the hands ending up on the dishes we later eat from.
Moisture and smell appear faster
One towel is often slightly damp all day. When it hangs by the sink and is used constantly, the water does not have time to evaporate, especially if there is no good air circulation in the kitchen. Then the fabric starts to smell and becomes a more favourable environment for bacteria. With at least two towels, one can dry while the other is in use. This is a simple way to keep them cleaner for longer and reduce the unpleasant smell that appears when the fabric never fully dries.
Heat and grease wear it out faster
When the same towel is used for hot dishes or for wiping greasy surfaces, the fabric wears out and gets dirty faster. Grease sinks deeper into the fibres and heat can damage them and make the fabric rougher. If the towel is only for hands or light wiping, it stays soft and pleasant to use for longer. Separating the uses helps keep each towel in better condition for longer, so you do not need to replace them as often.
How to solve the problem simply
You do not need ten towels. Most kitchens manage with two or three. One for hands, one for dishes, and a third as a spare or for wiping the table. The important thing is that they are easy to wash and dry quickly. Then changing them becomes a habit rather than an extra job. Many people notice that the kitchen feels more orderly and cooking itself becomes more pleasant when they have several towels, because they do not have to wonder whether the towel is still suitable to use.
If the old towel is already tired or smells, a new one is easy to choose in the Savas Home kitchen towels. When the towels are separated by purpose, the kitchen stays cleaner and more pleasant every day.
