Your Towel May Be Dirtier Than You Think – Here's When to Replace It

2026 06 09

We use a towel every day but rarely think about it – until it starts causing problems. Unpleasant smell after washing, hard texture, water that is not absorbed... In this article you will find everything you need to know: when to change, how to choose by GSM, material and purpose.

When Is It Time to Change Your Towel?

4 signs it is time to change:

  • Smells bad even after washing – bacteria have embedded themselves in the fabric
  • Has become hard and rough – irritates the skin, especially sensitive skin
  • No longer absorbs moisture – water runs off the fabric instead of being absorbed
  • Visible signs of wear – thin patches, holes, stretched edges

How often to change:

  • Bath towels – every 1–2 years
  • Hand towels – every 6–12 months
  • Face towels – every 6–12 months

GSM – the Most Important Number

GSM (g/m²) indicates the thickness and quality of the fabric. The higher the number – the thicker and softer the towel.

We use a towel every day, but rarely think about it. It just hangs on the hook, waits, does its job. Until one day we notice something is off – the smell, the texture, or simply the feeling that the towel no longer brings the same satisfaction as before.

The problem is that most people replace towels only when they should have been replaced long ago. In this article – everything you need to know: how to recognise the right moment to replace, what gramme weight and material mean, and how to care for towels so they last as long as possible.

4 Signs It's Time to Replace

Smells even after washing. This is not a detergent problem – these are bacteria that have settled deep in the fabric and can no longer be removed by normal washing. When the smell returns within a few hours after washing, the towel has done its time.

Has become hard and rough. A soft towel becomes hard over time not because it is broken – but because limescale deposits and fabric softener residues have accumulated in the fabric. A hard towel irritates the skin, especially sensitive skin or children's skin.

No longer absorbs moisture. When water runs over the fabric instead of being absorbed, the towel no longer fulfils its basic function. This is the clearest sign that it is time to find a replacement.

Visible signs of wear. Thin patches, holes, frayed edges – this is not just an aesthetic problem. Such a towel is no longer a hygienic tool.

How Often to Replace?

This depends on the intensity of use and care, but general recommendations:

Bath towels – every 1–2 years. Hand and face towels – every 6–12 months, as they are used more frequently and come into contact with the face, where the skin is more sensitive.

Gramme Weight – The Most Important Number to Know

Gramme weight (g/m²) shows the thickness and density of the fabric. It directly affects softness, absorbency and durability.

Gramme weight Suitable for
300–400 g/m² Sport, beach, travel
400–500 g/m² Daily use
500–600 g/m² Bath towels
600–700 g/m² Luxurious hotel feel

Practical tip: For the bathroom, choose 500–600 g/m² – this is the optimal balance between softness, absorbency and drying time. Lower gramme weight dries faster, higher gives a more luxurious feel but takes longer to dry.

Material – What Is the Difference and What Should You Choose?

Cotton – a classic for good reason. Absorbs moisture well, is hypoallergenic and – importantly – becomes softer over time, not harder. Egyptian or Turkish cotton is particularly worth seeking out: the longer fibre gives exceptional softness and durability.

Bamboo – the best choice for sensitive skin. Naturally antibacterial, extremely soft, absorbs up to 70% more moisture than standard cotton. A more eco-friendly choice for those who value that.

Linen – dries fastest of all. Strong, long-lasting, particularly suitable for kitchen use, the beach or travel. For the bathroom – a less traditional choice, but has its supporters.

Microfibre – light, compact, dries in minutes. Excellent for the gym and travel, but in the bathroom typically does not give the warm, luxurious feeling that cotton provides.

Towels by Purpose

Size and gramme weight should match the use – this is not just aesthetics but functionality.

Bath towel – 70×140 cm or larger, 500–600 g/m², cotton or bamboo. This is the main towel that deserves the most attention.

Hand towel – approx. 50×90 cm, 400–500 g/m². Used more frequently than the bath towel, so must be durable and quickly absorbent.

Face towel – the smallest, but comes into contact with the most sensitive skin area. Choose the softest possible material – Egyptian cotton or bamboo.

Sports towel – 300–400 g/m², microfibre or light cotton. The most important criterion – fast drying time and compact size.

Beach towel – 90×170 cm or larger. Choose a smooth surface and lighter gramme weight – it dries faster and is easier to carry.

How to Care for Them to Last Longer

Even the best towel will quickly lose its properties if not cared for properly.

Wash at 40–60°C. Higher temperature kills bacteria, but water that is too hot accelerates fibre wear.

Give up fabric softener. This is a counterintuitive tip, but fabric softeners create a thin layer on the fibres that over time reduces absorbency. If the towel has become hard, the problem is usually not a lack of softener – but an excess of it and limescale deposits.

Solution for a hard towel: wash with half a glass of white vinegar instead of softener. The vinegar dissolves limescale deposits and softener residues, restoring the original softness – without any additional products.

Shake well before drying. This opens the fibres and helps the towel remain fluffy. In the tumble dryer use low temperature – high temperatures burn the fibres.

Hang spread out. A rolled or folded towel dries more slowly, and a damp environment is ideal for bacteria.

Summary

A good towel is a daily pleasure that starts the morning with a pleasant feeling. It must be soft, absorb moisture well and smell fresh after every wash.

Simple rules worth remembering: for the bathroom choose 500–600 g/m² cotton or bamboo, for sport and beach – 300–400 g/m² lighter material, replace every 1–2 years or when you notice deteriorating properties.
