Why does bedding shrink after washing? Mistakes that are easy to avoid

2026 10 26

Many of us have washed bedding at least once and then been surprised that it became smaller. The duvet cover barely fits over the duvet, the pillowcase pulls at the seams, and the sheet looks shorter than before. Most of the time this is not a manufacturing defect. The fabric simply reacts to water and heat, and we sometimes unintentionally make a few mistakes that speed up the shrinkage.

Why fabric shrinks in the first place

Natural fibres, especially cotton and linen, have a tendency to shrink when they first come into contact with moisture and heat. During manufacturing the fabric is often stretched, and during washing the fibres relax and return to their natural position. If you wash in very hot water or dry at high temperature, this process happens faster and more strongly. Even high-quality bedding can shrink a little if you care for it too aggressively. It is normal, but it can be controlled.

The most common mistakes that make bedding shrink more

One of the most common mistakes is washing in water that is too hot. Many people think the hotter it is, the cleaner it gets, but for bedding 40 degrees is usually enough. Higher temperatures not only shrink the fabric but also wear the fibres faster. Another mistake is drying in the dryer at high temperature. Heat shrinks fabric faster than almost anything else. If you do use a dryer, choose a low temperature or avoid it altogether.

A third common mistake is using too much detergent or the wrong type. Strong products with bleach or aggressive enzymes can damage the fibres and make the fabric more likely to shrink. It is also important not to overload the washing machine. When bedding does not have enough room to move freely, it rubs more and can shrink unevenly.

How to reduce the risk of shrinkage

The simplest way is to follow the care label. Most cotton and linen bedding feels best washed at 40 degrees and dried naturally. If you still want to use a dryer, choose a low temperature and take the bedding out while it is still slightly damp. Then you can gently stretch it by hand and hang it to dry. This helps the fabric return to shape.

It is also worth washing bedding separately from other clothes, especially if you have a new set. The first wash is usually the most important. After that the fabric has already “settled” and shrinks much less later. What to do if the bedding has already shrunk

If a cover or sheet has already become too small, you can sometimes help a little. Wash it again in cool water and, while it is still damp, gently stretch it by hand. Then hang it to dry. In some cases this restores part of the lost size. If the shrinkage is severe, it is better not to try to “restore” it by force, as you can damage the seams.

Properly cared for bedding lasts longer and keeps its shape. The most important thing is not to rush with hot water and high drying temperatures. Then a new set will stay the way you expected from the start.
