Jersey, cotton, satin or microfibre — which sheet fabric suits your sleep?
We pick the colour quickly. We pick the fabric from a label that says “soft” — and then wonder why the night is hot, why the corners pop off, or why the sheet slides with us. Fabric is not a styling detail. It decides temperature, fit, and how the sheet looks after ten washes.
Cotton — a calm choice all year
Pure cotton breathes and absorbs moisture. It suits sensitive skin, children, and anyone who sweats at night. In summer it does not heat up like a thick synthetic layer; in winter it stays pleasant if the room is not icy.
“100% cotton” does not feel the same in every sheet. One kind is firmer and falls like plain cloth; another softens after a few washes. If you want a simple, hygienic, predictable sheet without sheen — start here.
Jersey — when the mattress is thick or sleep is restless
Cotton jersey behaves like a good T-shirt: soft, stretchy, wrapping. A fitted jersey sheet usually solves what satin cannot — corners that stay on a 25 cm mattress, or a mattress plus topper.
If you toss at night, jersey moves with you instead of against you. It is a little warmer than thin satin, so in a hot summer it can feel too cosy for heat-sensitive sleepers. For thick mattresses and restless sleep it is still the most reliable fabric.
Satin — look and slip
Satin gives a smooth surface and a soft sheen. The bed looks tidier and the skin feels less friction. Premium satin belongs with satin bedding and that hotel look.
The downside product texts dislike saying: satin slides. On a deep mattress it holds worse than jersey, and for a restless sleeper the corners let go sooner. Wash satin gently, without bleach or fabric softener, if you want to keep the sheen.
If a smooth look and a cool touch matter most — satin. If what matters is that the sheet is still there in the morning — do not start with satin.
Microfibre — care and allergies
Microfibre satin or plain microfibre dries fast, wrinkles less and is often labelled hypoallergenic. It works for everyday use, a guest bed, and anyone who washes often and does not want to iron.
Cheap, thick microfibre can feel hot. Good quality is not the same as a “plastic sheet”. If you sleep very hot and want a natural touch, cotton is still calmer. If you want quick drying, fewer creases and easier hygiene, microfibre earns its place on the bed.
How to decide without a table in your head
Hot and sweaty at night — cotton or thinner satin.
Tall mattress or a sheet that always slips — fitted jersey.
Smooth, glossy look — satin.
Easy care and hypoallergenic needs — microfibre.
You do not need four different sheets at once. One that solves your real problem is enough: slipping, heat, or laundry.
Jersey, cotton, satin and microfibre sheets in different mattress sizes are in the Savas Home sheet category — fitted and flat. Go to Savashome and choose by fabric and mattress measurements, not by guesswork.
In short: choose fabric by how you sleep, not by the photo. For hold — jersey. For skin — cotton. For look — satin. For care — microfibre.
