Everything About Snoring and How to Stop It
Pillows are designed to improve sleep—not to muffle your partner’s snoring. Snoring, defined as “noisy breathing during sleep,” can disturb both the snorer and especially their bedmate.
What causes snoring?
During sleep, throat muscles relax and narrow, and the tongue falls back toward the throat. As you inhale, these relaxed tissues vibrate, producing the sound of snoring—which can range from a soft rattle to a freight train–like roar. The narrower your airway, the louder the vibration and the snore. In severe cases, the throat can collapse completely, blocking the airway and causing obstructive sleep apnea, a serious health condition.
Risk factors include male sex, aging (which further relaxes throat muscles), anatomical issues (enlarged tonsils or nasal polyps), airway inflammation (from infections or allergies), sleeping on your back, alcohol before bed, and excess neck fat—sometimes even in muscular individuals with thicker necks.
When to see a doctor
Not all snoring is dangerous, but sleep apnea is linked to poor concentration, daytime sleepiness, car accidents, and higher cardiovascular risk. If you or your partner notice any of the following, consult a physician about a sleep study:
-
Excessive daytime sleepiness
-
Morning headaches
-
Overweight or obese
-
Persistent fatigue despite adequate time in bed
-
Memory, attention, or concentration problems
-
Witnessed breathing pauses or gasping during sleep
A sleep study will measure how often your airway closes—some people stop breathing over 100 times per hour without knowing it.
I admit I snore—what can I do?
Don’t worry—there are many solutions:
-
Lifestyle changes: Lose weight, avoid alcohol before bed, treat allergies.
-
White-noise machines, earplugs, or a fan can mask mild snoring.
-
Surgery: Trims or tightens floppy throat or nasal tissues.
-
Oral or nasal devices: Custom-made by a dentist to keep your airway open.
-
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure): The standard treatment for moderate to severe sleep apnea.
Snoring shouldn’t keep anyone from a good night’s rest. Sweet dreams!
